Wonder Woman star Lynda Carter lassoed some truth around her character’s sexuality, proudly calling the heroine a queer icon just in time for Pride Month!

To celebrate the beginning of Pride Month, Carter posted an illustration of Wonder Woman with a rainbow background and the caption: “Happy Pride! So excited to celebrate with all my LGBTQIA+ friends and fans.”
Carter starred as the Amazonian warrior princess Diana Prince in the hit 1975 show Wonder Woman. Armed with a magical belt, bulletproof bangles, a deadly tiara, and a lasso of truth, Wonder Woman served justice to evil-doers on the small screen until 1979. The character has since been reprised by Gal Gadot in films like Wonder Woman (2017) and Justice League (2021).
Standing up for queer representation
The illustration, created for DC Comics by artist Paulina Ganucheau, roused some comments by fans claiming that Wonder Woman was not “a superhero for gays,” to which Carter tweeted back: “You’re right. She’s a superhero for bisexuals!” Carter is only the latest person to reveal Wonder Woman’s sexuality. Back in 2016, one of the writers of Wonder Woman comics confirmed that the iconic character is queer.

This came after decades of speculation by fans who had seen hints (but no confirmation from DC Comics) that Wonder Woman had been in relationships with women. “I didn’t write Wonder Woman,” said Carter, “But if you want to argue that she is somehow not a queer or trans icon, then you’re not paying attention.”
