All That Glitters Isn’t Gold – Fame Made Goldie Hawn Extremely Depressed

Be careful what you wish for. Many of us have always thought that all our problems would go away if we were famous and wealthy, but after learning how fame caused Goldie Hawn to become very depressed, we’re seriously rethinking our wishes.

Goldie Hawn recently opened up in an interview about suffering from severe depression at the start of her career. In an interview with Good Morning Britain, the 76-year-old actress candidly discussed her mental health, saying, “when I was young, I became depressed.”

“When I was young, I became depressed. I was 21 and I [was] rising to success. I know it sounds terrible, but it’s a very, very difficult thing. I didn’t necessarily want that.” Hawn went on to say that the state of her mental health left her “unable to go outside in public.”

Hawn rose to fame in her early twenties. She attained international attention when she secured a job as a regular cast member on Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In sketch comedy show. When Hawn was 24 years old, she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Toni Simmons in Cactus Flower. The character she played in this film also struggled with mental health issues.

In the interview, Hawn said that she “didn’t want to be a big deal. I wanted to go home. I wanted to marry a dentist, I wanted to be a dancing school teacher. I did have a plan, but I didn’t have delusions of grandeur on any level. I was extremely realistic.”

Eventually, Goldie Hawn’s depression got so bad that she consulted her doctor and psychologist for treatment. Today, Hawn urges others to seek help when they feel that they need it. She rightfully feels that it is time to erase the stigma around mental health.
