Tiny roadside town goes on Sale for $350,000 on Craigslist

Ian Harvey

Most people habitually turn to Craigslist to find little bargains, however, if you have $350,000 lying around spare, and you are interested in buying an abandoned town, Craigslist could be your place as well. A Ghost town in Colorado is on sale on the site for just under half a million bucks; the town includes an abandoned motel, gas station, and a café. Mr. James Johnson, the owner of the Colorado town – which is known as Cabin Creek – posted the ad on Craigslist and is expecting a handsome cash. The town is not a very large neighbourhood ; just under five acres with two houses, an eight-space park for RVs and, low and behold, a private shooting range.

Johnson said that, since the add went up, a number of people have visited the town.

Located along Highway 36, it has easy access to all the surrounding towns and major cities. The town used to be a gathering point for locals decades ago, when people held get-togethers in and around the town’s cafe; it was around that time that Johnson first came across the fascinating place and decided to buy it for himself.

Before Johnson took over Cabin Creek, the town was owned by a couple who ran the café and the service station. Joan Lippett, who used to visit the place quite often back in the days with his friends, said that the couple served the best Chicken Fried Steak in the entire state and was one of the reasons people flocked to gather in the town.

Speaking to reporters, Johnson said that he bought the place with ambition and wanted to transform the place into Route 66 style attraction, however, his wife did not agree with such an ambitious plan. The buildings and the houses stayed mostly empty all through the time Johnson owned the town, and the café has also been dysfunctional since Johnson never got around doing anything special with the place and it slowly lost its old charm.

However, town’s gas station, spanning over 3,300 sq. ft., is still in good condition with all its pumps fully functional. Back in the day, the gas station also served as a repair shop for those who parked in the town for some fun, and doubled as a movie theater for the tourists.

In the ad on Craigslist Johnson clearly mentioned that the place is not in best of the conditions and requires major renovation and restoration. However, during their time in Cabin Creek, Johnson and his wife did manage to restore several areas of the town. During the initial restoration work Johnson and his wife had bought a small mobile house for themselves, which is also included in the price of $350,000.
