Digital artist skillfully restores severely damaged vintage photos

Goran Blazeski

It is said that “a picture is worth a thousand words” and for many of us, this has been proven true on more than one occasion. Sometimes we spend hours trying to describe a moment from the past to our relatives or friends, but only a glimpse at a photograph is enough to say it all.

It was 1826 when French inventor Joseph Nicéphore Niépce created the earliest surviving photograph, titled View from the Window at Le Gras, in the Burgundy region of France and forever secured himself a place in history.

But little did he know that his View from the Window at Le Gras would go on to become an artifact like no other in the history of photography and will always be among the most coveted items in exhibitions throughout the world. Apart from its historical significance, Niépce’s photography marked the beginning of what would go on to become part of our culture and, in recent decades, part of our everyday lives.

For nearly two centuries, photography has played an important role, keeping our memories safe throughout the years and preserving them for the upcoming generations. Photographs often remind us of the people we love and the moments we have spent with them in the past. They have the power to transport us back to our most precious moments and to remind us of what we once were. Additionally, photographs can make us wonder what we are about now, and can give us the strength we need to move on after a tragic event.

A step further was the invention of digital photography, which made it possible for us to document every minute of our lives and in recent years has undoubtedly become one of the greatest achievements in the history of technology.

While nowadays we can easily store thousands of digital photographs, many of us have faced difficulties trying to store and preserve old photos. The fact is that they don’t last forever, and over the years they can be severely damaged due to exposure to light, temperature, and humidity. Improper storage, as well as infestation by insects, can easily damage our photographs by leaving holes and stains.

Luckily, now there are many professionals whose job and passion is to bring these damaged photographs back to life. However, when it comes to photo restoration, few can match the skills of Ukrainian digital artist Tetyana Dyachenko.

As Kelly Richman-Abdou wrote for My Modern Met, “her retouching talents, attention to details and unwavering patience, are each apparent in her impressive portfolio of restored vintage photos.”

One look at her restored vintage photos would be enough for one to conclude that holes, stains, water damage, and cuts are no threat for Dyachenko as she handles flaws exceptionally well.

As stated on Dyachenko’s website, during the 10 years of providing professional retouching services, her company has “retouched hundreds upon hundreds of images for various purposes, completed numerous projects that required an in-depth understanding and appreciation of photography and extensive art skill.”
