As Harrison Ford faces his 80s, some felt he might be ready to call it quits when it comes to acting, especially after he announced he’ll officially be retiring the character of Indiana Jones. However, Ford has other plans. For him, work is vital to his lifestyle, so audiences can expect to keep seeing the actor in future projects – he’s even slated to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

Ford has brought the character of Indiana Jones to the big screen numerous times over the course of the past four decades. Following the fifth and final instalment of the franchise, 2023’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, he’ll be retiring the character for good.

As this is the final appearance of Indiana, and audiences have seen the character age over the past 40 years, Ford wanted to make sure his retirement was properly addressed. “I wanted it to be character driven, and I wanted us to confront the question of age straight on,” he explained. “Not to hide my age, but to take advantage of it in the telling of the story.”

Ford gave an interview to Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?, where he explained that, while he plans on retiring Indiana Jones, he won’t be giving up acting altogether – and there’s a reason. “I don’t do well when I don’t have work,” he explained. “I love to work. I love to feel useful. It’s my jones. I want to be helpful.”

Despite being in his 80s, Ford intends to keep up the hard work. During the interview, he explained exactly what it is that keeps him returning to film sets time and time again.

“It is the people you get to work with,” he shared. “The intensity and the intimacy of collaboration. It’s the combined ambition somehow forged from words on a page. I don’t plan what I want to do in a scene. I don’t feel obliged to do anything. I’m naturally affected by things that I work on.”

After hanging up Indiana’s whip for the last time, Ford already has his next projects laid out for him. Joining a stellar cast that includes Robert Downey Jr., Anthony Hopkins, Samuel L. Jackson and more, he’ll take over the role of Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
