Reggae Icon Bob Marley Dies at 36

May 11th, 1981, stands as a significant date in music history, marking the last moments in the life of reggae icon Bob Marley. At the time, Marley’s influence was steadily rising, with his band, The Wailers, captivating audiences with their distinctive blend of reggae rhythms and socially conscious lyrics. Albums like Exodus and Rastaman Vibration had already begun to solidify Marley’s status as a global musical force, captivating audiences far beyond his native Jamaica.

In 1977, Marley’s health took a drastic turn when he discovered a malignant melanoma on his toe, initially thought to be a soccer injury. Despite undergoing surgery to remove the tumor, the cancer had already spread. Marley’s relentless touring schedule and dedication to his music masked the severity of his condition, but by 1980, the symptoms became impossible to ignore. In September of that year, while jogging in Central Park, Marley collapsed. The incident revealed the gravity of his illness, signaling the beginning of a decline that would ultimately lead to his untimely passing in May 1981.
