Diane Keaton has had a very long and impressive Hollywood career. With her good humor, beauty, and charm, it should come as no surprise that she has brushed shoulders (and more) with some of the most sought-after men in the industry. Despite her fair share of romances, Keaton, now 77, is happy to stay single. In fact, she says she’ll never date again.

Keaton has had some high-profile romances

Keaton’s film career began in 1970 and she’s remained one of the biggest stars in Hollywood ever since. Being cast in several movies over her more than 50-year career has given her a lot of opportunities to engage in romantic relationships with her co-stars.

To name a few, she and Woody Allen became lovers after first meeting at her audition for his Broadway play, Play It Again, Sam, in 1969. Then, she and Al Pacino had a long on-again off-again romance that began during their filming of The Godfather: Part II (1974). It lasted until around 1990.

While filming the 1981 romance-drama Reds, Keaton began a romantic relationship with co-star Warren Beatty, although it didn’t last long. It has even been rumored that Keaton had a thing with Keanu Reeves, who is 18 years her junior. She said to Oprah in 2006, “I’m going to marry him. He likes an older woman.” However, it’s neither been confirmed nor denied that the two ever engaged in a romantic relationship.

Back in 2019, Keaton was asked if she ever goes out on dates. Her response was frank and to the point. “I don’t date,” she said. “Never. All Right?” she continued. “Let’s just get that straight. That one’s important. I haven’t been on a date in, I would say, 35 years. No dates.”

She explained that she has plenty of male friends to whom she is very close with, but prefers to keep things platonic. She is perfectly happy staying single and has no interest in starting up a romance in the future. In fact, she said, “I don’t remember anyone calling me, going, ‘This is So-and-So. I’d like to take you out.’ [It doesn’t] happen. Of course not.”

She’s never been married

Lisa Kudrow once asked Keaton what it was that drove her to never want to marry, despite her long history of romantic relationships. One of the reasons she listed was her mother. “It goes back to my mother, because, for me, most everything does. I love my dad, of course — that goes without saying—but she was always there, and he was always working,” Keaton said.

“I saw how much she gave up,” she continued. “I feel like she chose family over her dreams. And she was just the best mother, but I think that she is the reason why I didn’t get married. I didn’t want to give up my independence.” Watching her parents’ lives play out in front of her helped her decide what she didn’t want to happen in her own life.

She jokingly explained that another reason she never got married was that no one had ever asked. “I should’ve started with that and called it a day,” she laughed.

Keaton has other things to occupy her time

Romance is simply not high on Keaton’s priority list, and she instead spends her time pursuing other passions and surrounding herself with people she loves. First and foremost, that includes her adopted children, Dexter and Duke.

Keaton first adopted her daughter Dexter in 1996, when she was 50 years old. Then, five years later in 2001, she adopted her son Duke. She spent several years enjoying caring for her children while also continuing her successful career. Dexter and Duke have now grown up and flown the nest. This leaves Keaton even more time to explore her interests, including caring for her dog, Reggie, and exploring her love for photography.
